The electric blue acara is a line-bred colour form of Andinoacara pulcher, the blue acara of northern South America, selected for a pale, evenly iridescent blue body. It has the build and the manner of a proper cichlid — deliberate, watchful, quick to investigate anything new — while being far calmer than most cichlids of its size. That combination is why it has become such a common centrepiece fish.
Aquarium care
- Adults reach roughly 15 cm.
- Needs a tank with a decent footprint and open swimming room, not a tall narrow one.
- Digs and rearranges substrate, so plant heavily rooted species or use potted plants.
- Calm for a cichlid, but it will eat small fish and shrimp that fit in its mouth.
- Tolerant of a wide range of water chemistry provided conditions are stable.
- Takes quality pellets, frozen foods and most prepared diets.
Good with medium-sized peaceful fish such as larger tetras, rainbowfish, corydoras and bristlenose plecos. Avoid keeping it with neon tetras, dwarf shrimp or anything else small enough to be eaten, and avoid aggressive Central American cichlids in the same tank.
Stock rotates with each shipment, and livestock is available for local pickup at our Lethbridge store. See the South American cichlid collection.
