Echinodorus "Uruguay" is a narrow-leaved sword plant traded under that name and usually referred to Echinodorus uruguayensis. Beside the broad-leaved Amazon swords it looks more upright and slender, with long, wavy-edged leaves that can pick up olive to bronze tones in good light. Naming within the swords is untidy, so read the label as a trade name rather than a settled identification.

Aquarium care

  • Rosette plant: roots buried, crown left proud of the substrate.
  • Feeds heavily through the roots, so use root tabs or a nutritive substrate.
  • Moderate to strong light brings out the darker colouring, and in low light it stays plain green.
  • Slow to establish and then steady, so give it several weeks before judging it.
  • Grows without CO2, though it fills out faster with it.
  • Plant it as a single specimen or a loose group with room to spread.

A good background plant for medium and large community tanks with tetras, rainbowfish, corydoras and peaceful cichlids. The leaves are narrow enough that it does not shade out everything behind it.
