If a sword plant is failing in an otherwise healthy aquarium, the substrate is nearly always the reason. Echinodorus paniculatus is one of the classic large swords of the hobby, sold under this name for decades and closely tied to the Amazon sword group from tropical South America, and like all of them it draws the bulk of its nutrition up through its roots. A tank with a rich water column and bare gravel will still produce a pale, stunted plant.
Aquarium care
- Bury root tabs beside the crown and top them up every few months.
- Use at least a few inches of substrate so the root mass has somewhere to go.
- Plant with the roots covered and the crown sitting at the surface of the gravel.
- Expect a settling-in period. Emersed nursery leaves often melt before submerged ones appear.
- Remove spent outer leaves right at the base rather than cutting them short.
A background plant for larger aquariums, well matched to discus, angelfish, severums and community fish that will not excavate around it.
Plant stock rotates. Collect in person at our Lethbridge store, and see the other sword plants we stock.
