Indian red sword (Echinodorus "Indian Red") is a cultivated sword plant grown for its new leaves, which emerge deep red to bronze before maturing to a darker green with reddish veining. It has the familiar broad-leaved rosette shape of the sword plants and holds real presence as a single specimen.
Aquarium care
- Rosette plant. Bury the roots but leave the crown clear so the growing point is not smothered.
- Midground to background specimen. Give it a good arm's width of clear space around it.
- Moderate to strong light keeps the red in the new leaves. In dim tanks the colour is muted.
- Feeds mostly through its roots, so root tabs under the crown are the priority rather than liquid dosing.
- Does not require CO2, though it grows faster with it.
- Propagates from runners carrying small plantlets. Separate them once they have rooted properly.
A natural centrepiece for a South American style community tank, where the broad leaves suit angelfish, larger tetras and dwarf cichlids that like something to shelter under. It rewards patience more than fussing.
Stock rotates with each shipment and is available for local pickup at our Lethbridge store. See the echinodorus collection.
