Start with the size, because it is the deciding factor. Echinodorus grandifolius is one of the larger swords in the hobby, a broad-leaved rosette plant from tropical Central and South America that will fill a surprising volume of a tank once its roots are established. In anything under a couple of feet of depth it quickly reaches the surface and shades everything behind it. Given the space, it becomes the sort of single specimen a whole layout is built around.

Aquarium care

  • Roots do most of the feeding. Bury root tabs near the crown and refresh them periodically.
  • Use a deep substrate. A shallow layer will not hold a plant of this mass upright.
  • Bury the roots but keep the crown at the surface of the substrate, not below it.
  • Nursery plants grown out of water often shed those leaves once submerged. Cut them away and wait for the new set.
  • Remove old outer leaves at the base rather than trimming them halfway.

A background plant for large community aquariums, discus tanks and South American biotope setups with fish that will not dig at the roots.
