Vesuvius sword (Echinodorus angustifolius "Vesuvius") is an unusual cultivated sword whose narrow leaves twist into tight corkscrew spirals. It stays far smaller than most Amazon swords and behaves more like an ornamental grass, which makes it useful as a midground accent rather than a background giant.
Aquarium care
- Rosette plant. Plant the roots and keep the crown sitting just above the substrate line.
- Midground, or even foreground in a larger tank where the spiral form can be appreciated up close.
- Moderate light suits it, and it does not need CO2.
- A root feeder, so root tabs pushed in beside the crown are the most effective way to feed it.
- Propagates by sending out runners carrying daughter plants, which can be separated once they have roots.
- Give it clear space. Crowding hides the twisted leaf shape that is the whole point of the plant.
Best for aquascapers looking for a texture accent among broad leaves and fine stems, and for anyone who wants something unusual that is still easy to keep. Corydoras and other bottom dwellers work well around it.
