The diamond neon tetra is a selectively bred form of the neon tetra (Paracheirodon innesi), developed for extra reflective scaling over the back and shoulders. The familiar red rear half and blue stripe are still there, but the upper body picks up a scattering of silver-white sparkle that shows best when a shoal moves together. Care is no different from an ordinary neon.
Aquarium care
- Keep a group of at least eight. Neons look washed out and nervous in small numbers.
- Soft, slightly acidic water is ideal, though tank-bred stock adapts to a range of conditions.
- Warm, gently filtered water and stable parameters. They react badly to sudden swings.
- Planted tanks with shaded areas and a darker substrate bring the colour out.
- Feed small flake, micro pellets and frozen foods such as daphnia and baby brine shrimp.
They suit a calm planted community with rasboras, pencilfish, corydoras, otocinclus and adult dwarf shrimp, though shrimplets will be eaten. Keep them well away from anything large enough to swallow them, including angelfish and grown cichlids.
