The deep water hap (Placidochromis electra) is a Lake Malawi cichlid with a pale metallic blue body and a distinct dark bar running down behind the head. In the lake it follows larger sand-digging cichlids and picks through the material they stir up, which tells you most of what you need to know about how to set its tank up. It is one of the more even-tempered larger haps.
Aquarium care
- Adults reach around 15 cm.
- Give it an open sand bed to sift and forage over.
- Needs a large, hard-water aquarium with rockwork at the edges rather than filling the tank.
- Relatively peaceful for a Malawi hap, though males hold territory.
- Keep one male with several females.
- Takes quality pellets and frozen foods readily.
Suits a Malawi community with peacocks and other calm haps of similar size. Avoid keeping it with aggressive mbuna, which will monopolise food and space, and avoid small community fish. Males colour up properly only once settled and mature.
