The dalmatian molly is a selectively bred form of the sailfin molly (Poecilia latipinna), marked with irregular black spotting over a white or silver body — no two are patterned the same, and the spotting often shifts as a fish grows. Mollies are livebearers from the coastal fresh and brackish waters of North and Central America, and they are among the more robust community fish provided their water suits them.
Aquarium care
- Adults commonly reach 8 to 10 cm.
- Does best in hard, alkaline water; soft acidic water is the usual cause of trouble with mollies.
- An omnivore with a real appetite for algae and vegetable matter — include a plant-based flake or blanched vegetables.
- Peaceful, but males pester females constantly. Keep two or three females for every male.
- Occupies the middle and upper water column.
- A livebearer, so expect young in a settled community tank.
They suit a hard-water community with platies, swordtails, larger rasboras and peaceful barbs. Avoid fin-nippers and anything that needs soft, acidic water, since the two groups pull in opposite directions. Mollies must never be released into ponds or waterways.
Stock rotates with each shipment, and livestock is available for local pickup at our Lethbridge store. See the molly collection.
