Willis's crypt (Cryptocoryne willisii) is one of the smaller cryptocorynes, forming low rosettes of narrow, slightly wavy green leaves. It is a patient plant that fills in over months rather than weeks, and settled groups make a neat dark border along the front of a tank.

Aquarium care

  • Rosette plant. Plant the roots in the substrate with the crown left uncovered.
  • Foreground to low midground. Plant several small clumps and let them spread together.
  • Expect crypt melt. After planting, or after any large change to the tank, the existing leaves may go soft and brown and dissolve away. This is normal. Leave the roots undisturbed and new submerged leaves grow back over the following weeks.
  • Low to moderate light suits it, and it does not need CO2.
  • A root feeder that does noticeably better with root tabs in inert substrate.
  • Propagates by runners, producing daughter plants alongside the parent.
  • Dislikes being moved, so choose its position once and leave it there.

Well suited to low-tech tanks and to patient aquarists. Corydoras, small rasboras and other quiet fish take to the low cover it provides.

Stock rotates with each shipment, with local pickup at our Lethbridge store. See the cryptocoryne collection.
