The croaking gourami (Trichopsis vittata) is a small labyrinth fish from still, vegetated waters across Southeast Asia, and the larger of the two croaking species commonly sold. The body is a soft brown-olive marked with two or three broken dark stripes, and the fins carry blue and red speckling that shows up when the fish is well settled. Its name comes from a genuine sound: a series of clicks or croaks produced during display, audible through the glass in a quiet room.

Aquarium care

  • A small species, larger than the sparkling gourami but still modest.
  • Peaceful, though males spar and croak at one another without much damage.
  • Keep a small group in a densely planted tank with floating cover.
  • Prefers still or very gently moved water.
  • Breathes air at the surface, so leave an air gap under the lid.
  • Takes small foods: micro pellets, crushed flake, frozen daphnia and bloodworm.

Suits a quiet planted tank with rasboras, small tetras and corydoras. Fast or greedy tankmates will keep it hidden and outcompete it at feeding time.

Stock rotates with each shipment, and livestock is sold for local pickup at our Lethbridge store. See the current gourami list.
