The costae tetra (Moenkhausia costae) is a Brazilian characin from the Sao Francisco basin, and a good deal more substantial than the nano tetras most people picture. The body is polished silver with a dark lateral stripe that runs back into the tail, finished with a yellow flash at the base of the caudal fin. In a group, under decent lighting, the reflective flanks do most of the work.
Aquarium care
- A shoaling fish. Keep six or more, and a larger group is better still.
- Needs open swimming space, so a longer tank suits them.
- Soft to moderately hard water, warm and well filtered.
- Takes flake, micro pellets and frozen foods without fuss.
- Active and fast, and a lid is worthwhile.
They work well in a lively South American community with other mid-sized characins, peaceful cichlids such as eartheaters, and corydoras or plecos working the bottom. Very small fish and long-finned tankmates are a poorer match, since a busy shoal of larger tetras can be pushy at feeding time.
Stock rotates, and local pickup is available at our Lethbridge store. More in tetras.
