The bronze cory (Corydoras aeneus) is the original and still the most widely kept of the corydoras catfish. Depending on the light and the line, the flanks show either a warm copper bronze or a distinct green sheen over the shoulder, which is why the same fish is sold under both names. It is a broad, plated little catfish from across much of tropical South America, and it is about as durable a fish as the hobby offers.
Aquarium care
- Reaches roughly 6 cm.
- Peaceful, and one of the better first fish for a new aquarist.
- Keep six or more; they are social and forage as a group.
- Sand or smooth gravel is essential to protect the barbels.
- Bottom-dweller. Feed sinking wafers or pellets so it gets its share.
- Tolerant of a wide range of water conditions.
Bronze corys sit comfortably under almost any peaceful mid-water community: tetras, rasboras, platies and small gouramis. They also clean up spilled food, though they should never be relied on as the only cleanup crew. Give them one shaded corner with wood or a plant and they will use it.
