The clown killifish (Epiplatys annulatus) is a tiny West African surface fish from forest streams in Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia. The body is cream with four broad black bands, and the tail is the reason people buy it: the central rays extend into a pointed spike coloured red, blue and white, which genuinely does look like a small rocket. It hangs just under the surface, almost motionless, then darts.

Aquarium care

  • Reaches around 3 cm.
  • Peaceful and very easily bullied.
  • Keep a group of eight or more.
  • Wants still or very gently moved water, dense planting and floating cover.
  • Lives at the surface and rarely goes deeper.
  • Has a tiny mouth. Feed micro pellets, crushed flake, frozen cyclops and baby brine shrimp.
  • A jumper. Keep the tank covered.

Best in a small planted species tank, or with slow bottom-dwellers such as pygmy corydoras that occupy a completely different level. It will not compete with anything faster.

Stock rotates with each shipment, and livestock is sold for local pickup at our Lethbridge store. See the current killifish.
