The chili rasbora (Boraras brigittae), also sold as the mosquito rasbora, is one of the smallest fish in the freshwater hobby. It comes from blackwater peat swamps in southwestern Borneo, where the water is soft, acidic and stained brown with tannins. Males carry a deep red body split by a dark lateral stripe; females are fuller-bodied and paler. In a bright, bare tank they look washed out and disappointing, which is almost always a setup problem rather than a fish problem.
Aquarium care
- Tiny — adults stay under 2 cm.
- Keep at least ten, and preferably more; small groups hide and never colour up.
- Soft, acidic, tannin-stained water brings out the red. Leaf litter and botanicals help.
- Dark substrate, floating plants and subdued light make a visible difference.
- Needs very small food — micro pellets, crushed flake, baby brine shrimp.
- A mature, stable tank; these are not fish for a newly cycled setup.
They belong in a planted nano or small community with dwarf shrimp, pygmy corydoras and other tiny peaceful fish. Anything with a mouth larger than theirs will eventually eat one, and boisterous fish will keep them hidden.
Stock rotates with each shipment, and livestock is available for local pickup at our Lethbridge store. See the rasbora collection.
