The checkered barb (Oliotius oligolepis) is a small Southeast Asian barb from Sumatra, named for the pattern of dark-edged scales that forms rough rows of squares along the flank. Males are warmer in tone with red-tinged fins and darker edging; females are a plainer silver-tan. It is a modest fish rather than a showy one, and it reads best in a planted tank where the scale pattern catches the light as the group moves.
Aquarium care
- Reaches about 5 cm.
- Peaceful and easy-going for a barb.
- Keep six or more.
- Appreciates planting, driftwood and gentle flow.
- Spends most of its time in the middle of the tank.
- Omnivorous: flake, micro pellets and frozen daphnia or bloodworm.
Suits a planted community alongside cherry barbs, rasboras, tetras and corydoras. Its small size and mild temperament make it an easier option than the tiger barb group for a mixed tank.
Stock rotates with each shipment, and livestock is sold for local pickup at our Lethbridge store. See the rest of the current barbs.
