The cat's eye turbo snail (Turbo sp.) is a heavy, turban-shaped grazer named for the round, green-centred operculum it seals itself behind. It is one of the hardest-working algae eaters available for a marine tank โ a hungry turbo will clear a patch of hair algae off rock or glass overnight and keep going. Size and strength are what you are buying, and also what you need to plan around.
Aquarium care
- Larger than most reef snails, commonly 4 to 5 cm across the shell.
- A dedicated herbivore that eats film algae, hair algae and other soft growth.
- Strong enough to push over unglued frags and loose rockwork as it grazes.
- Will starve in a tank that is too clean, so stock to the algae you actually have.
- Can struggle to right itself if it falls onto open sand.
- Sensitive to copper-based medication and to salinity swings; drip acclimate.
They suit established reef and fish-only tanks with a genuine algae supply and stable rockwork. Glue frags down before adding one. Avoid keeping them with puffers, triggerfish and large hermit crabs, which will make short work of the shell.
Stock rotates with each shipment, and livestock is available for local pickup at our Lethbridge store. More in the saltwater collection.
