The bristlenose pleco (Ancistrus sp.) is the standard-issue algae eater for anyone who has learned that a common pleco grows to nearly half a metre. This one does not. The body is a mottled dark brown to grey-black, often flecked with pale spots, flattened underneath and finished with a broad suckermouth. Mature males carry a thicket of fleshy tentacles across the snout; on females they are shorter and confined to the edge.
Aquarium care
- Reaches roughly 12 to 15 cm.
- Peaceful with other species; males hold territory against each other.
- Largely herbivorous: algae wafers, blanched courgette, cucumber and green beans.
- Driftwood is not optional. Bristlenose rasp on wood as part of their diet.
- Wants a cave or shaded overhang to sit out the day in.
- Bottom-dweller that works the glass and hardscape.
- A heavy waste producer for its size, so do not skimp on filtration.
It fits into most peaceful community tanks and is one of the few plecos that will actually keep glass and wood clear of algae at a manageable adult size. Pair it with tetras, barbs, rainbowfish or medium-sized cichlids that leave the bottom alone.
Stock rotates with each shipment, and livestock is sold for local pickup at our Lethbridge store. See what is in on our pleco page.
