The brichardi (Neolamprologus brichardi) is a slim, tan-bodied cichlid from the rocky shorelines of Lake Tanganyika, finished with blue-edged fins and long trailing filaments on the tail and gill covers. It is best known for its family structure: a breeding pair holds a territory, and older offspring stay on to help defend and raise the next batch, so a single pair gradually becomes a colony that runs the tank.

Aquarium care

  • Adults reach around 10 cm including the fin extensions.
  • Needs hard, alkaline water with high mineral content โ€” Tanganyikan conditions, not soft water.
  • Requires stacked rockwork with caves and crevices to claim.
  • Reasonably calm until it breeds, at which point it defends a large area with real determination.
  • Micropredator and omnivore; takes quality flake, small pellets and frozen foods.
  • Occupies the lower and middle levels around the rocks.

Best kept as a pair or small group in a Tanganyikan tank with other rock-dwelling Lake Tanganyika cichlids that can hold their own. A breeding colony will eventually claim most of a small tank, so plan for space. They are not suitable company for soft-water community fish.

Stock rotates with each shipment, and livestock is available for local pickup at our Lethbridge store. See the Tanganyikan collection.
