The Borneo sucker, or hillstream loach (Gastromyzon sp.), is a small, flattened loach from the fast, cool rivers of Borneo and mainland Southeast Asia. Its low, sucker-shaped body lets it cling to rocks in strong current while grazing the film of algae and micro-organisms that grows there. These fish reach the trade under several names, so we list them simply as Gastromyzon hillstream loaches.
Aquarium care
- Best in cool, highly oxygenated water with strong flow, the conditions of their native hill streams
- Provide smooth rocks and hardscape where a film of algae and biofilm can build up to graze
- Give at least a 20 US gallon tank with a mature, well-lit surface for grazing
- Sensitive to warm, stagnant or poor water, so keep an established tank with regular water changes
- Peaceful; keep a small group and pair with other calm, current-loving fish
Suits keepers who can offer a mature tank with plenty of flow rather than a warm, still community. Stock rotates and changes often, and this is a local pickup item at our Lethbridge store. Browse our loaches.
