XL Shubunkin Goldfish

This listing is for extra-large shubunkin goldfish (Carassius auratus) — calico, single-tailed fish already well grown rather than juveniles. Buying a big goldfish changes the job in one useful way and one demanding way. The useful part is that you can see the finished pattern; nacreous calico markings settle with age, so what you are looking at is close to what you are keeping. The demanding part is that the tank has to be ready on day one.

Aquarium care

• An adult-sized fish needs adult volume immediately — there is no grow-out period.
• Do not add a large goldfish to a newly set up tank; the filter must already be mature and capable.
• Coldwater, and comfortable without a heater in a normally heated room.
• Needs swimming length; single-tailed goldfish are strong, fast swimmers.
• Oversized filtration and generous water changes, because waste output scales with size.
• Sinking pellets plus blanched vegetables suit them better than floating flake.

House them with other single-tailed goldfish of comparable size. A large goldfish will easily outcompete fancy varieties. Goldfish are invasive where introduced in Canada, so never release one into a pond, canal, storm basin or waterway.
