The blue diamond discus is a solid-colour line of the South American discus (Symphysodon sp.), bred away from the striping of the turquoise fish it descends from until the body carries an even metallic blue with no bars or pattern. Good examples hold that colour across the head and into the fins, and the red eye stands out sharply against it. Discus themselves are Amazonian cichlids from warm, still, tannin-stained water.
Aquarium care
- Wants a tall aquarium; height and front-to-back depth both matter.
- Warm water near the top of the tropical range, kept stable.
- Excellent water quality, maintained with frequent partial water changes.
- Keep five or more, or an established pair.
- Feed slowly and generously: discus granules, frozen bloodworm, beefheart blends.
- An even, unpatterned fish shows scrapes and blemishes readily, so net and move it carefully.
A good choice for a keeper who wants a single striking colour rather than a busy pattern, and who already has the water change habit. Cardinal tetras, rummy nose tetras and sterbai corydoras suit the warmth; quick, boisterous fish such as tiger barbs are a poor match.
Stock rotates with each shipment, and livestock is sold for local pickup at our Lethbridge store. Current arrivals are listed in the discus collection.
