The blue badis (Badis badis) is a small Asian fish from slow, weedy streams, sometimes called the chameleon fish because it shifts between drab brown and a deep iridescent blue depending on mood, lighting and whether a male is displaying. It is a hunter rather than a grazer, spending its time perched on wood or leaves watching for small prey, and it rewards a quiet tank and a patient keeper.
Aquarium care
- Small — adults reach about 6 cm.
- A micropredator. Many individuals refuse flake and dry food entirely.
- Feed live or frozen foods such as daphnia, cyclops, bloodworm and brine shrimp.
- Shy; it needs dense planting, wood and leaf litter to feel secure.
- Prefers gentle flow and a mature, established tank.
- Males hold small territories around a cave or crevice.
Best in a quiet planted tank, either on its own or with small peaceful fish that do not compete aggressively for food — small rasboras and pencilfish work well. It will eat dwarf shrimplets, so a shrimp colony is a poor pairing. Avoid fast, greedy tankmates that will take every meal first.
