Blonde naso tang

The blonde naso tang (Naso elegans) is the Indian Ocean counterpart of the naso tang, told apart by the broad bright yellow dorsal fin running the length of the back and the orange detailing around the face and tail. It is an elegant, unhurried swimmer that covers a lot of ground, and like its Pacific relative it grows into a serious fish.

Aquarium care

• Adults commonly exceed 30 cm.
• Needs a very large, long aquarium with strong flow and open swimming lanes.
• A herbivore; dried marine algae or nori offered daily matters to its condition.
• Relatively calm for a surgeonfish, but still intolerant of similar-shaped tankmates.
• Wants stable, well-oxygenated water in a fully mature system.
• It does not eat corals.

Suited to a large established marine aquarium with substantial tankmates — bigger angelfish, wrasses and other large reef fish. It should not be bought small on the assumption the tank can be upgraded later; buy it only if the aquarium it will need as an adult already exists.
