The black and white ocellaris clownfish is a high-contrast colour form of Amphiprion ocellaris — crisp white bars over a body that ranges from deep grey to near black depending on the individual and its age. It is the same fish behaviourally as the orange clownfish everyone knows: bold for its size, quick to claim a corner, and endlessly busy around whatever it decides to host in.
Aquarium care
- Adults reach about 8 cm.
- Suits a 75 L or larger marine aquarium.
- Best kept as a single fish or one bonded pair; clownfish added later are usually driven off.
- Eats prepared marine pellets, flake and frozen foods readily.
- An anemone is not required and adds considerable difficulty for a new keeper.
- Body colour typically deepens as the fish matures.
Good company includes cardinalfish, gobies, chromis and small wrasses in a settled reef or fish-only tank. Expect territorial behaviour around its chosen spot, and avoid pairing it with other clownfish species or with shy bottom dwellers that have nowhere to go.
Stock rotates with each shipment, and livestock is available for local pickup at our Lethbridge store. See the saltwater fish collection.
