Black Ice Clownfish

Black Ice clownfish are a captive-bred designer strain of the ocellaris clownfish (Amphiprion ocellaris), sitting between the standard orange fish and the fully black Darwin form. Expect a dark charcoal body with white bars that often spread irregularly, and real variation from fish to fish — no two are patterned quite alike. Behaviour is ordinary ocellaris: bold, expressive and firmly attached to one corner of the tank.

Aquarium care

• Adults reach about 8 cm.
• A 75 L aquarium is a reasonable minimum for one fish or a pair.
• Keep a single fish or one bonded pair; introducing more clownfish later tends to end badly.
• Captive bred, so it takes pellets, flake and frozen foods without persuasion.
• An anemone is not required, and is a separate project in its own right.
• Hardy and forgiving by marine standards.
• Colour and barring keep developing as the fish matures.

Suits a settled reef or fish-only tank with gobies, cardinalfish, chromis and small wrasses. It will defend its chosen spot, so avoid other clownfish species and very timid bottom dwellers that cannot move away.
