The black ocellaris clownfish is a dark colour form of Amphiprion ocellaris, the same species as the familiar orange clownfish but carrying a deep charcoal to jet-black body against clean white bars. The naturally occurring dark form comes from the Darwin region of northern Australia, and most fish in the trade today are captive bred. Juveniles often start out brownish and darken as they mature, so a young fish will not look like its final self on day one.

Aquarium care

  • Adults reach about 8 cm.
  • A 75 L aquarium is a reasonable minimum for one fish or a pair.
  • Keep one fish or a single bonded pair; adding more clownfish later usually causes fighting.
  • Captive-bred stock eats pellets, flake and frozen food without any coaxing.
  • An anemone is not needed — most settle on a coral, a rock or a corner of the glass.
  • Hardy and forgiving, which makes it a sensible first marine fish.

Good tankmates include gobies, cardinalfish, chromis and small peaceful wrasses. Expect it to defend a chosen patch of the tank, so avoid other clownfish species and very shy bottom dwellers with nowhere to retreat.

Stock rotates with each shipment, and livestock is available for local pickup at our Lethbridge store. Browse the saltwater fish collection.
