The black neon tetra (Hyphessobrycon herbertaxelrodi) comes from the Paraguay basin in Brazil and is a quieter fish than its name suggests. Two stripes run the length of the body: a narrow iridescent white-green line above a broad matte black band, with a bright red-gold crescent over the top of the eye. There is none of the red of a true neon tetra, and the effect is graphic rather than colourful, which is exactly why it works so well against green planting.

- Hardier and more adaptable about water chemistry than the common neon tetra.
- Mid-water swimmer.
- Omnivorous: small flake, micro pellets, frozen daphnia and bloodworm.
A dependable schooling fish for a planted community with corydoras, otocinclus, rasboras and dwarf gouramis. Its toughness makes it a better first tetra than the neon for a tank that is still settling in.
