Black-barred Myleus

Myleus schomburgkii

The round shape and silver color of the Black Bar Silver Dollar  show that this freshwater fish is appropriately named, as it resembles a U.S. silver dollar coin with a dominant vertical black stripe across its body. Only growing to about 5” when mature, a tank size of 50 gallons minimum is sufficient.

A peaceful fish, it can make its home in a community tank with other fish and invertebrates too large for it to eat. They do have strong jaws that can bite, so keep this in mind. Silver Dollars are a lively schooling fish and best kept in groups of five or more.

To mirror its natural habitat and help reduce stress, include rocks, plants, and driftwood in your aquarium. Because the Black Bar Silver Dollar fish are notorious plant nibblers, your aquascape may have to include plastic plants.

Silver Dollars are mostly herbivorous (they do eat small crustaceans, snails, clams, and small fish in the wild) and thus need plenty of vegetable matter in their daily diet. Algae tablets, flake foods or any other suitable foods should be fed multiple times daily, keeping a close watch to make sure they are getting their share from more aggressive eaters such as Barbs and Tetras.
