The black bar silver dollar (Myleus schomburgkii) is a South American characin with a tall, round, coin-shaped silver body crossed by a single bold vertical black bar. It is a close relative of the plainer silver dollars and is easily told apart by that one clean stripe. Sold small, it grows into a substantial deep-bodied fish that needs room to shoal and turn.
Aquarium care
- Grows well beyond the size sold in shops; plan the tank for the adult fish.
- A shoaling species. Keep five or more, or they stay nervous and skittish.
- Largely herbivorous. Offer vegetable-based foods, blanched greens and algae wafers.
- Will eat soft aquarium plants, so it is not suitable for a planted display.
- Wood, rock and open swimming space suit it; harder plants or artificial plants hold up better.
- A secure lid is important, as startled fish jump.
Suits a keeper with a large tank who wants an active shoal rather than a planted scape. Peaceful towards fish too large to be eaten, so it can share space with similarly sized calm species. Small fish and shrimp are not appropriate tankmates.
Stock rotates with each shipment, and livestock is sold for local pickup at our Lethbridge store. See the assorted and interesting collection for current stock.
