Dragon scale describes a betta (Betta splendens) bred for unusually thick, opaque, metallic scaling that sits over the base colour like armour plating. On this platinum black dragon halfmoon plakat, a near-white metallic sheen covers a black body, and the contrast at the edges of each scale is what gives the form its name. The short plakat finnage keeps the fish a strong swimmer rather than a drifting display animal.
Aquarium care
- Adults reach about 6 to 7 cm.
- Needs a heated, filtered tank of around 19 L or more.
- One male per tank; two males will fight.
- Must be able to reach the surface to breathe atmospheric air.
- Feed a betta pellet with frozen bloodworm or daphnia.
- Thick dragon scaling can grow over the eye in some individuals, gradually reducing vision. Check the eyes of any dragon-scaled betta before you buy, and keep watching as the fish matures.
Suits a single-fish tank or a calm community with corydoras, otocinclus and snails. A fish with reduced vision needs food placed where it can find it, and does better without fast competitive tankmates. Avoid other gouramis and fin-nipping barbs.
