The zebra loach (Botia striata) comes from streams in the Western Ghats of southern India and is among the most manageable members of the genus. The body is olive-green to grey, overlaid with a dense pattern of narrow pale bands that fork and rejoin, giving a finer, busier look than the bold blocks of a clown loach. It is active during the day, which is not true of every loach, so you actually get to see it.

Aquarium care

  • Reaches around 8 cm, small for a botia.
  • Peaceful by loach standards, though it has its own pecking order.
  • Keep five or more.
  • Wants caves, wood and a soft substrate for foraging.
  • Eats pest snails.
  • Bottom-dweller: sinking pellets, wafers and frozen bloodworm.

Its smaller size makes it a better fit for an ordinary community tank than yoyo or clown loaches. It works with tetras, rasboras, barbs and corydoras. As with all botias, it is a poor choice if you want ornamental snails to survive.

Stock rotates with each shipment, and livestock is sold for local pickup at our Lethbridge store. See the current loach and botia list.
