The banded tiger loach (Syncrossus helodes) is a Southeast Asian botiid from the Mekong and Chao Phraya basins, and a considerably tougher fish than the loaches most people meet first. The body is a warm tan crossed by ten or more narrow dark vertical bars, with a pointed, almost pike-like snout that separates Syncrossus from the blunter Botia. It grows well beyond community size and it does not mellow with age.
Aquarium care
- Grows large and needs a spacious tank with plenty of length.
- Assertive and territorial, including towards its own kind.
- Keep eight or more so the aggression is spread across the group rather than landing on one fish.
- Wants caves, wood and rockwork to break up sightlines, over smooth sand.
- Needs strong filtration, good oxygenation and regular water changes.
- A capable jumper. Keep the tank tightly covered.
Only for large tanks with fast, robust tankmates that can look after themselves. Placid fish, however big, will be harassed, and small or long-finned fish are not an option.
Stock rotates with each shipment, and livestock is sold for local pickup at our Lethbridge store. See the current loach and botia list.
