Assorted Ricefish

Assorted ricefish are mixed colour lines of the Japanese medaka (Oryzias latipes), a species bred in Japan for centuries and now available in an enormous range of forms, from platinum white and gold to blue, orange and black, some with metallic scales. An assorted group gives you whatever combination has come in. They are small surface fish with high-set eyes and an upturned mouth, and they spend the day working the top few centimetres of the tank.

Aquarium care

• Small, roughly guppy-sized.
• Peaceful and undemanding.
• Keep six or more.
• Handles a wide temperature range, including unheated rooms.
• Feeds at the surface: floating flake, micro pellets and frozen daphnia.
• Females carry their eggs attached to the body before depositing them on plants.

A sensible choice for an unheated tank, a small planted setup or a shrimp tank, and easy company for white cloud minnows and other calm small fish.
