Glo pristella tetras are fluorescent forms of the pristella or X-ray tetra (Pristella maxillaris), a hardy South American tetra from the Amazon and Orinoco basins. The colour comes from an inherited fluorescent protein gene — the fish are bred that way and pass it to their young, rather than being dyed or injected. This is an assorted listing, so the mix of colours changes with each shipment; ask our staff what is in the tank on the day.
Aquarium care
- Reaches about 4 cm.
- Shoaling — keep six or more, and they behave better in larger groups.
- Hardy and adaptable, which is why the base species is a long-standing beginner fish.
- Peaceful and not a habitual fin-nipper.
- Feed flake, micro pellets and frozen foods.
- Fluorescence is far more visible under blue or actinic lighting than under standard white light.
They suit a peaceful community with corydoras, rasboras, other tetras and small livebearers. As genetically modified ornamental fish they must never be released into any waterway, canal or storm pond — return unwanted fish to a shop or rehome them instead.
