The comet goldfish (Carassius auratus) is the long-tailed, single-tailed form of the goldfish, with a slim body and a deeply forked tail that can make up a good share of its total length. Assorted stock covers the usual mix of orange, red and white, and yellow patterning, and colours often change as the fish grows. Comets are coldwater fish that grow substantially larger and live far longer than most people expect when they buy them small.

Aquarium care

  • Coldwater. No heater is needed at normal indoor room temperature.
  • Grows large and lives for many years, so plan the tank around the adult, not the juvenile.
  • Produces a lot of waste; give it a large water volume and generous filtration.
  • Regular water changes and a good maintenance routine are non-negotiable.
  • Sociable; keep more than one where the tank volume allows.
  • Will graze on soft plants, so choose planting accordingly.

Suited to a keeper with a genuinely large coldwater tank rather than a bowl or a small starter kit. Keep with other goldfish rather than tropical community fish, whose temperature needs do not match. Goldfish have established themselves in Canadian waters after being let loose, so never release them or their water into ponds, lakes, creeks or storm drains, and never rehome them into an outdoor pond.

Stock rotates with each shipment, and livestock is sold for local pickup at our Lethbridge store. See the goldfish collection for current stock.
