Butterfly koi, also sold as longfin or dragon koi, are a long-finned form of the koi carp (Cyprinus rubrofuscus) developed by crossing standard koi with long-finned Asian carp. The fins trail well behind the body and continue to lengthen with age. This is an assorted listing, so colour and pattern vary with every shipment — ask our staff what is in the tank on the day.
Aquarium care
- Grows very large, well beyond 60 cm, and grows steadily for years.
- Long-lived — koi routinely live for decades, so this is a long commitment.
- Coldwater, and tolerant of a wide temperature range.
- Produces a great deal of waste; volume and filtration capacity matter more than anything else.
- Omnivorous and destructive to live plants, which it will eat and uproot.
- The trailing fins are easily damaged by rough surfaces and sharp decor.
Buy one only if you can house an adult of this size, and talk to our staff about what you have before you commit. Koi are a form of common carp, which is invasive where introduced in Canada — never release one into a lake, river, canal, storm pond or any other waterway, and rehome unwanted fish instead.
