The Asian needle nose gar (Xenentodon cancila) is a slim, silver, surface-hugging predator from South and Southeast Asia. The long beak-like jaws give it its common name, though it is not a true gar — it belongs to the needlefish family. In a well-lit tank it hangs almost motionless just under the surface and then moves faster than you expect.
Aquarium care
- Reaches around 30 cm, most of that length rather than bulk.
- Needs a long tank with plenty of open surface; height is of little use to it.
- Nervous and prone to bolting. It can injure its jaw on glass and lids, so approach the tank calmly.
- A determined jumper — keep the aquarium fully covered.
- A predator that takes meaty frozen foods and, with patience, prepared foods; many are slow to switch from live food.
- Settles better in a small group than as a single fish.
It suits a large, calm tank with similar-sized fish that occupy the middle and lower levels and will not compete at the surface. Anything small enough to swallow will be eaten, and boisterous tankmates will keep it stressed. Dim lighting and floating plants help it settle in.
