Ammonia should read zero in an established aquarium. Anything above that means the biological filter is not keeping up with the load, whether because the tank is still cycling, stock went in too quickly, something has died unnoticed, or the filter media was cleaned too thoroughly. A strip tells you there is a problem; a liquid reagent kit gives you a more precise figure to act on.
