Air stones are a consumable — mineral scale and biofilm slowly close off the pores, output drops and the pump works harder, so plan on replacing them periodically. Aqua One intend these to be run with an air pump, check valve and airline tubing; if the pump sits below the water line, fit the check valve so water cannot siphon back into it.
