Anubias (Anubias sp.) is the tough, slow-growing rhizome plant of West African streams, with thick dark green leathery leaves held on short stalks. This is a non-specific listing, and the genus covers everything from tiny nana petite forms through to broad-leaved barteri types, so leaf size and shape depend on what arrived with the shipment. Ask our staff which anubias is currently on the shelf.
Aquarium care
- Never bury the rhizome. The thick horizontal stem must sit above the substrate, or it rots and the plant dies.
- Attach it to driftwood or rock with cotton thread or a small dab of gel superglue, or simply wedge it into the hardscape until the roots take hold.
- Low light is fine and often preferable, since strong light over such a slow grower mainly encourages algae on the leaves.
- No CO2 needed. It feeds from the water column rather than from the substrate.
- Propagate by cutting the rhizome into sections with several leaves each, using a clean blade.
- It grows slowly enough that one plant looks much the same for months.
Ideal for beginners, low-tech tanks, and setups with fish that dig, since it lives on the hardscape rather than in the substrate.
Stock rotates with each shipment, with local pickup at our Lethbridge store. See the anubias collection.
