Colour is the whole point of this one. Anubias barteri var. nana 'Golden' opens each new leaf a pale, almost yellow lime, holds that shade for a few weeks, then gradually deepens toward ordinary green as the leaf matures. The result is a small plant with two tones on it at once, brightest at the growing tip. It stays low and compact like any nana, so the effect works close to the front glass where it can actually be seen.
Aquarium care
- Attach the rhizome to hardscape and leave it uncovered. Buried rhizomes rot.
- Moderate light shows the golden tone best, but strong light brings algae onto those long-lasting leaves.
- Do not expect speed. A handful of new leaves a season is normal.
- Older leaves lose the pale colouring, which is age rather than a deficiency.
- Divide the rhizome to spread it across several pieces of wood.
Well matched to nano tanks, shrimp tanks and small community aquariums with pygmy corydoras, chili rasboras or a single betta, all of which appreciate the low, broad leaves to rest on.
