Anubias Heterophylla

Anubias heterophylla is one of the genuine wild species behind a genus better known for its cultivars. It grows across a wide band of West and Central Africa in streams and swamp forest, spending part of the year emersed on the bank and part submerged when water rises. The submerged form carries long, lance-shaped leaves on tall stalks, and the species name refers to how variable that leaf shape can be from one population to the next.

Aquarium care

• This is a big Anubias. Give it room at the back of a tank with reasonable depth.
• The rhizome is fixed to wood or rock, or laid on the substrate. It is never planted under it.
• Comfortable in low light and undemanding about fertiliser, though it responds to steady water column dosing.
• Growth is measured in new leaves per month rather than per week.
• Cut the rhizome into pieces to propagate once it has spread.

Best suited to established tanks with the height to show it off, including larger community setups and South American cichlid tanks where softer plants would be uprooted or eaten.
