The name describes the leaf. Gold Coin is a compact Anubias cultivar whose leaves are short-stalked, thick and close to circular, overlapping into a low mound instead of reaching upward. Set against the pointed leaves of most aquarium plants, that rounded outline is unusual enough to carry a small layout on its own. Like the rest of the genus, it traces back to shaded West African streams, though this particular form exists only in cultivation.

Aquarium care

  • Keep the creeping rhizome on the surface, glued or tied to stone. Burying it is the usual way people kill Anubias.
  • Prefers dim to moderate light; it will grow under taller plants without complaint.
  • Very slow, so a plant bought at a given size stays close to that size for months.
  • Long-lived leaves collect algae over time. Gentle wiping during water changes keeps them clean.
  • Divide the rhizome with a clean blade when it branches.

It suits foregrounds, shallow tanks and anyone who wants structure without maintenance. Small, peaceful fish and quiet bottom dwellers make sensible company, and larger fish that uproot planted stems generally leave it alone.

What we have on hand changes regularly. Pickup is at our Lethbridge store, and the full plant range is worth a look.
