Coffeefolia (Anubias barteri var. coffeefolia) takes its name from its foliage, not from any relation to the coffee bush. Each new leaf pushes out a coppery bronze and deeply puckered between the veins, then hardens over several weeks into dark, glossy green. That heavy corrugation is what separates it from the flatter-leaved Anubias, and it is why the plant reads as textured rather than plain once it settles into a layout.
Aquarium care
- The thick horizontal rhizome must stay above the substrate. Bury it and it rots.
- Tie or glue it to driftwood or stone, or wedge it into a crevice until the roots take hold.
- Growth is slow, and low to moderate light suits it. Strong light mostly feeds algae.
- Because individual leaves last so long, algae has time to build on the oldest ones. Wipe them or shade them.
- Divide by cutting the rhizome, leaving three or four leaves on each piece.
This is a plant for aquarists who want a mid-ground accent that never needs trimming. The leaves are tough enough that most fish which shred soft stems ignore them, so it works in community tanks and angelfish setups.
