Nano tank stocking: what fits in a 5 to 10 gallon aquarium

The short answer: a 5 to 10 gallon nano tank is best kept as a single-species or lightly stocked home. A 5 gallon suits one betta, or a small colony of shrimp, or a handful of the very smallest fish. A 10 gallon opens up a small school of nano fish plus a cleanup crew. The common mistake is treating a nano like a scaled-down community tank and overstocking it. The smaller the water volume, the faster water quality swings, so restraint is what keeps the fish healthy.

Good options for a 5 gallon

  • One betta. A heated, filtered 5 gallon is a genuinely good betta home. See our betta selection, and the betta care guide below for the details.
  • A shrimp colony. Neocaridina shrimp thrive in a well-established 5 gallon and breed readily. Browse shrimp.
  • A snail or two as a low-bioload cleanup option.

Good options for a 10 gallon

  • A small school (six or more) of one nano species such as ember tetras, chili rasboras or endlers.
  • A small group of guppies, keeping in mind they breed quickly.
  • A betta with a small, peaceful cleanup crew of shrimp or snails, though temperaments vary and it is not guaranteed.

Schooling fish need to be in groups to feel secure, so it is better to keep one proper school than one each of several species.

Gear a small tank still needs

Nano does not mean no equipment. You still need a heater and a filter. A small pre-set heater such as the Fluval P Series is sized for tanks this size, where a full-size heater will not fit. For filtration, a gentle sponge filter or a low-flow unit from our filters collection avoids blasting small fish around.

Why restraint pays off

In a small volume, ammonia and temperature move quickly, so an overstocked nano is a fragile nano. Stock lightly, feed modestly, and keep up regular water changes, and a small tank can be one of the most rewarding ways to keep fish.
