The blue opaline gourami is a domesticated line of Trichopodus trichopterus, the three spot gourami. Selective breeding has replaced the two dark body spots of the wild fish with a swirling blue marbling that darkens and sharpens when a male is asserting himself. Colour aside, it is the same fish as the gold and standard blue forms, and all of them will interbreed. Sexing is straightforward: the dorsal fin is long and pointed in males, short and rounded in females.
Aquarium care
- Reaches about 12 cm.
- Males are territorial with each other, so keep one male, with a few females to spread his attention.
- Needs a long tank with planting and wood to break up sightlines.
- A labyrinth fish; leave an air gap between the water and the lid.
- Uses its thread-like pelvic fins to taste and investigate its surroundings.
- Omnivorous and undemanding: flake, pellets and frozen foods.
A hardy centrepiece for a medium to large community with barbs, larger tetras, rainbowfish and corydoras. Nano fish and dwarf shrimp are the wrong company for a fish of this size.
Stock rotates with each shipment, and livestock is sold for local pickup at our Lethbridge store. See the current gourami list.
