The blue dwarf gourami is a colour form of Trichogaster lalius, the dwarf gourami of northern India, Bangladesh and Pakistan. Where the standard fish alternates red and blue banding, this line has been bred towards an even powder blue over the whole body, with the fine red flecking largely removed and a pale, almost silver throat. Like all gouramis it is a labyrinth fish and takes gulps of air at the surface, so the tank needs a little clear space above the water.
Aquarium care
- Reaches around 7 cm.
- Males are territorial with each other. Keep one male per tank unless the tank is large.
- Shy in open water; wants planting, floating cover and gentle flow.
- Spends most of its time in the upper half of the tank.
- Omnivorous: flake, small pellets, frozen daphnia and bloodworm.
It suits a calm planted community with harlequin rasboras, corydoras, otocinclus and small peaceful tetras. It is a poor match for boisterous barbs, for other male dwarf gouramis, and for bettas, which provoke the same territorial response.
Stock rotates with each shipment, and livestock is sold for local pickup at our Lethbridge store. See the current gourami list.
