Its name comes from the dorsal fin, which in a mature fish rises into a tall, deeply divided plume that it raises when displaying. The body is grey-brown covered in fine dark spotting, breaking into a marbled pattern on juveniles, and the whole fish is built along the solid, blunt-headed \u003cem\u003eSynodontis\u003c\/em\u003e lines with three pairs of barbels.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch2\u003eAquarium care\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cul\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eGrows into a substantial catfish; buy it for a roomy tank, not a small one.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eMostly nocturnal, though it becomes bolder once settled.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eWants caves, pipes and wood to shelter under during the day.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003ePeaceful with fish it cannot swallow, and can be territorial with other \u003cem\u003eSynodontis\u003c\/em\u003e.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eOmnivorous: sinking pellets, wafers, frozen bloodworm and some vegetable matter.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eIts pectoral spines lock out, so move it in a container rather than a net.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003c\/ul\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eA natural fit for an African tank alongside Malawi or riverine cichlids, and for any large, robust community.
