They are bought to pair with males, to balance a tank where males are being harassed, or to keep a breeding line going, and they are every bit as hardy as their showier counterparts.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch2\u003eAquarium care\u003c\/h2\u003e\u003cul\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eFemales reach around 5 to 6 cm, noticeably larger than males.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003ePrefers hard, alkaline water, which most tap water in this region provides.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003ePeaceful and active in the middle and upper levels of the tank.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eTakes flake, micro-pellets and small frozen foods without fuss.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eLivebearing — a female can carry stored sperm and produce several broods from a single mating.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eKeep at least two or three females for every male so no one fish is constantly pursued.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003c\/ul\u003e\u003cp\u003eThey suit a peaceful hard-water community with platies, corydoras, small rasboras and other calm fish. Avoid fin-nippers and anything large enough to eat them.
